How to Soften Gorilla Glue?

how to soften gorilla glue

Are you going to repair your ceramic dish? Some knickknacks may have sentimental value to you. Other ones are antique and priceless. Making small crafts out of glass beads or plates is tricky. Their surface is smooth and non-porous. Use a quick-bonding super glue. Have you already got a bottle or tube of a perfect adhesive? Oh no, it has hardened! How to soften Gorilla Glue? It depends on its type, base, amount and container size. Let’s discuss several tips and tricks we can try. I hope they help you to make the glue flexible again.

How Long Does Adhesive Take to Set?

Do you need glue for your various household projects? Every week or month, you repair picture frames, vases, or floor tiles in your kitchen. Besides, old wooden furniture or hardwood floors require renewal over the years. Meanwhile, automotive parts like wheel caps, bumpers, or headliners need a strong adhesive: it holds them in place. Finally, you may want to craft small items with your kids. Make bracelets, necklaces, or pillowcases.

So, you have a lot of DIY project ideas. Quite naturally, you need an ideal adhesive for them.

Best glue for glass has to be:
  • strong;
  • versatile;
  • safe;
  • fast-setting;
  • impact-resistant;
  • transparent.

Now you find out: how long does gorilla glue take to set? Many Gorilla Glue products meet these demanding requirements. I think Gorilla Epoxy is a perfect glue for glass to glass. It’s clear, strong, easy to use. It sets in 5 minutes resists impact of water and solvents. Use it indoor or outdoor. Repair your rearview mirror or a brake light with it. But hardener components, mercaptans, emit toxic fumes. So, use epoxy glue only in a well-ventilated area.

Can Gorilla Glue Be Dissolved?

Ideal glue doesn’t exist. No adhesive product meets all household repair needs. Gorilla Glue Company provides a wide range of adhesive, tapes and sealants. Each of them suits a certain application. You easily find a product and size you need. It works on multiple, but still limited surfaces and materials. So, selection of a best-suited item might be a challenging task. How do you soften glue? It depends on the base and formula.

General Types of Adhesives

Product Name Base Cure Time Open Working Time Service Temp. °F
Original polyurethane 24 h. 20 min. -40 – 200
Super cyanoacrylate 30 min. 10 sec. -65 – 220
Epoxy epoxy 12-24 h. 5 min. -10 – 180
Wood PVA 24 h. 5 – 10 min. 0 – 150
School water 48 h. 24 h. about 40

I would divide all top-quality adhesives into 2 groups. Some of them are non-toxic, safe to use. Water-based glues are great for kids. Is gorilla glue toxic on skin? PVA-based adhesives are water-soluble, eco-friendly. They are permanent, bonding certain materials pretty good. The glue works on paper, fabric, cardboard, and photos. You easily remove it from your hands and surfaces with water. If a water-based glue hardens a bit, it dissolves in water.

On the other side, you would need the strongest glue for glass to metal. Only Original, Epoxy or Super Glue would work. These adhesives dry fast, creating strong bonds. Using them, don’t forget to wear latex or rubber gloves. Otherwise, apply the adhesive with a disposable brush. Do you want to remove a fast-setting glue from your hands? It might be virtually impossible. Try to sop it up with a paper towel, dissolve by acetone or peel it off. However, acetone can affect your health.

Can You Soften Gorilla Glue in the Microwave?

Yes, you can soften Gorilla Glue in the microwave, but special care must be taken to avoid overheating, fire hazards, and other risks.

When hardened Gorilla Glue needs to be loosened or removed, here is a safe microwave method:

  1. Put the Gorilla Glue material in a microwave-safe container like a glass bowl or mug. Do not leave any metal, foil, etc touching the glue.
  2. Add a small amount of water, just enough to submerge the glue or touch the area needing softened. Cover the container if possible.
  3. Microwave 5-10 seconds at a time, checking often. Stop when the glue softens, before boiling or bubbling.
  4. Use an oven mitt! The heated glue and container will be dangerously hot. Gently scrape or peel softened glue as needed once cooled enough to safely handle.
  5. Do NOT microwave general purpose Gorilla Glue for more than 20-30 sec total ever. Even with water added, overheating risks fire. Softening, not melting, is the goal.

Proceed cautiously when reheating this or any adhesive. But in short 5-second bursts, the microwave can soften dried Gorilla Glue for easier removal from surfaces, hands, materials where unwanted bonding occurred, etc. Just slowly and carefully apply bursts of heat until it releases.

Does Heat Soften Gorilla Glue?

Fortunately, top-quality adhesives have something in common. All of them are heat-resistant. Only the kids’ glues are applicable at room temperatures. Super glue hardens fast. Its service life in a closed bottle is between 6 and 12 months. If you’ve opened it, it lasts for about a month.

Is it possible to renew the glue? Manufacturers don’t recommend heating or microwaving it. How do you loosen dry glue? The only available advise is to heat the bottle with water. It works when a small amount of glue remains.

  1. Break the seal.
  2. Get a pan of boiling water.
  3. Let it cool a bit.
  4. Submerge the bottle for several minutes.

I don’t know how it works. Maybe, it happens because of certain properties of cyanoacrylate adhesives. They are not completely resistant to moisture and humidity. Gorilla Glue hardens, as it loses moisture. Renew it with hot water. The temperature is to be lower than boiling, but uncomfortable to touch by your hand. At a temperature that exceeds 180 degrees F, the glue might get unstable too. This method may work on your hands too. Keep water slightly warm. Use soap, oil or lemon juice to remove adhesive.

How to Keep Gorilla Glue from Drying Out?

Fast-setting glues harden fast. They react to air and moisture. To avoid it, try to:

  • squeeze the tube to remove air from it;
  • put the cap on, when there is no air inside;
  • cover the hole with scotch tape;
  • store the bottle is a zippered bag;
  • seal it properly;
  • put it in your freezer;
  • store the glue in a cool, dry place.

Final Impression

Does Gorilla Glue dry hard? It’s possible if outside water or air enters the container. Avoid it, using a vacuum sealer. If not only the glue surface but a whole its contents hardened, discard it. Buy a new container. Use, seal and store it properly. Observe safety precautions. Most importantly, wear gloves and face mask before applying glue. Besides, ventilate the room and don’t inhale the fumes. These simple tips help you to avoid the risk and remain healthy.

  • Warning: Avoid placing the hardened plastic bottle in a microwave to soften it, If punctured glue spreads all over .

  • I disagree with Gerry. Microwave works if done carefully.
    My 2 oz bottle of Gorilla glue was hard as a rock. I had a nail in the top hole to keep the channel clear. I removed the nail and the pointed top which was also clear .
    I put the plastic bottle in the microwave at TEN percent power — ONLY 10% — kept checking. Be patient, very patient. For a 2 oz. bottle, give it about 30-40 minutes at 10%. WARNING: DO NOT SPEED THE PROCESS UP ON HIGHER POWER! IT MAY EXPLODE IN THE MICROWAVE! Think about that. I’d rather not.
    Squeeze the plastic bottle with a pot holder (it gets hot) every 5 minutes or so to move the glue around, and reposition the bottle in a new spot. The glue softens from the top down. Continue until the glue has softened and looks dark and liquidy.
    Shake the bottle before using it. I used it on my project and it worked like new glue. Very happy with my solution.

  • Hi Garry,

    Your advice about heating glue in the microwave is certainly good! Especially if it comes from your own experience.
    But you have to be extremely careful when using this method! As you say. So I recommend, in my opinion, the safer and easier to use method of softening hardened glue with hot water.
    Thank you for your experience!
